Robert Marsh
Director of Engineering

Robert Marsh has been with Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS) since 2019, taking up the role of Director of Engineering in November 2021. He is responsible for leading the CAeS engineering team, encompassing design and certification, and directing the engineering solution for Project FRESSON. This groundbreaking initiative aims to deliver the world’s first zero-emissions, passenger-carrying aircraft using hydrogen fuel cell propulsion.

Robert brings over 30 years of leadership and engineering experience across the aerospace, automotive, and military sectors. Since joining CAeS he has been deeply involved in Project FRESSON, contributing to its development from inception. His prior roles include Senior Programme Manager for Manufacturing Logistics at Jaguar Land Rover, where he led manufacturing expansion projects in Brazil and Slovakia, as well as electric and internal combustion powertrain programmes.

During his distinguished 26-year career in the Royal Air Force, Robert held several key positions, including Engineer Officer and Head of the Typhoon Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation, which he established and achieved approval from the Military Aviation Authority. He also led engineering and logistics operations supporting UK military activity in the Falkland Islands and managed the UK Harrier fleet.

Robert’s academic achievements include an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds, an MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design from Cranfield University, and an MBA from Durham University. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE), and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS).

A co-author of the Establish-Sustain-Validate-Recover-Exploit methodology for military aircraft structural integrity, Robert has contributed significantly to the UK Ministry of Defence’s approach to managing structural, systems, and propulsion integrity for military aircraft. His work continues to shape best practices in aerospace engineering.

Robert’s vision for the aviation industry is clear: to reduce its environmental impact through innovative propulsion systems that produce no CO₂ at their point of use. He believes Cranfield Aerospace Solutions is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation, driving the adoption of sustainable aviation technologies.

Beyond his professional life, Robert is passionate about building renovation, architecture, and military history. He is also a committed supporter of Guide Dogs for the Blind, reflecting his dedication to creating a positive impact both in and beyond his industry.
